For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12)

Last week I began a five-week sermon series I’m calling “Notes from the Father” focused on the readings from 1 Thessalonians. During a brief visit to Thessalonica, Paul preached the gospel and the Holy Spirit gathered a small group of people as the Church. Then, persecution drove Paul off and left those new believers to face opposition alone.

Paul wrote this first letter to the Thessalonians to encourage them and deepen their faith. The letter was, as a I shared last week, like a note from a loved one. As I prepared my sermon, I toyed with the idea of asking each worshiper to consider sending a note of encouragement to someone. I decided against the idea, and given the circumstances, I’m glad I did. It would have felt oddly self-serving!

I was very surprised when at the end of the worship service Nancy Nicoletto and George Harris shared the congregation’s appreciation for me and my ministry. Between the cake, many cards, and other gifts received, I felt very appreciated, and I want to thank you all. Without my prompting, you put into action the essence of my preaching that day: thanks be to God for we have been chosen to love the Lord and serve others in Jesus’ name.

Serving as your pastor is a great privilege and joy. Thank you for sharing your love with me!

P.S. Pastor Appreciation Month was begun in 1992 when Jerry Frear Jr first proposed the idea. Jerry was the founder of Under His Wings Ministry and a relative of our own Dean Frear!
